Going on a Journey

Class 2: Solitude · Community · Service

Welcome to the second class in our study of Solitude, Community, and Service.

This class will focus on solitude as an essential part of the Christian life. Solitude is more than being alone, finding quiet time, or withdrawing from people. In the writings of Henri Nouwen, solitude is the place where we come before God honestly, listen for His voice, and remember that our deepest identity is found in being beloved by Him.

Many people experience loneliness, restlessness, pressure, and the need to prove themselves. Solitude invites us to bring those inner struggles into the presence of God. Rather than running from silence or filling our lives with constant activity, we learn to be still before the Lord and allow His love to shape how we understand ourselves, others, and our service.

What We Will Explore

In this class, we will consider the movement from loneliness to solitude. We will reflect on how loneliness can become a place of fear, self-rejection, and anxious searching, but how God can transform that inner emptiness into a place of prayer, honesty, peace, and spiritual freedom.

We will also consider how solitude helps us face the false self: the part of us that tries to find worth in success, approval, usefulness, power, or what others think of us. In solitude, God gently calls us away from these false sources of identity and brings us back to the truth that we are His beloved children.

Key Questions

As we begin this class, we will reflect on questions such as:

  • What is the difference between loneliness and solitude?
  • Why is silence often difficult for us?
  • What does solitude reveal about our inner life?
  • How does solitude help us hear God’s voice more clearly?
  • How does knowing we are beloved by God change the way we live?
  • How does solitude prepare us for community and service?
Scripture for Reflection

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
— Psalm 46:10

“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
— Matthew 6:6

“Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.”
— Luke 4:1

Purpose of This Class

The purpose of this class is not only to understand the idea of solitude, but to consider how it can become part of our walk with Christ. Solitude teaches us to stop, listen, wait, and receive. It helps us move from anxiety to trust, from performance to belovedness, and from restless activity to faithful presence before God.

Our Hope

Our hope is that this class will help us see solitude not as emptiness, isolation, or escape, but as a place of meeting with God. As we learn to be still before Him, may we grow in our awareness of His love, our honesty about ourselves, and our readiness to live faithfully with others.

Solitude is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a deeper life with God, a life that can then move outward into community and service.
