Crucified Path

We return, in this final stretch of the series, to where we began: “who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame.” It’s worth asking a simple question we may have skipped past earlier — what was that joy, exactly? Not relief that the pain would end, though surely that was part of it. The text points somewhere larger: seated at the right hand of the throne of God, reconciled sons and daughters brought home, a bride prepared, a kingdom secured. The joy set before Jesus was not private comfort. It was us.
This reframes what joy even means on the crucified path. It is not the absence of suffering, and it never was, even for Jesus. Joy, in this verse, is something set before us — future, certain, and strong enough to be worth present cost. We live, even now, with that same joy set before us: a hope not yet fully seen but no less real for being unseen. This is what it means to hold suffering and resurrection life together without letting either one cancel out the other — the ache is real, and the joy ahead is just as real, already guaranteed by the same God who raised Jesus from the dead.
If your present suffering feels disproportionate to any joy you can imagine on the other side of it, you are in good company; even Jesus needed a joy set before him to endure what he endured. That joy did not depend on him feeling it in the moment of agony. It depended on the Father’s promise, which held regardless of what Jesus felt on the cross. The same is true for you. Your future joy does not depend on your ability to feel it today. It depends on the same promise, held by the same God.
Ways to fix your eyes on the joy set before you:
Write down one specific hope Scripture promises you — reunion, restoration, a world made right — and place it somewhere you’ll see daily, as a tangible “joy set before” you.
When today’s suffering feels bigger than any future good, pray Hebrews 12:2 back to God as your own request: “Help me endure for the joy set before me, the way Jesus did.”
Spend five minutes imagining, in concrete detail, being fully with Christ, suffering ended, nothing hidden. Let that picture pull you forward rather than only pushing through today.

The joy was worth it to him. It still is. Look past the shame to what’s set before you.
