Spiritual Battle: Ephesians 6:14-20
The Armor and Prayer
Prepared by James King — Adult Bible Study
The Text
Ephesians 6:14-20 continues Paul’s command to stand by describing the armor of God and the place of prayer.
The Big Idea
Believers stand by receiving and using what God supplies: truth, righteousness, gospel readiness, faith, salvation, the word of God, and prayer.
Connection to Ephesians 6:10-13
Verses 10-13 tell believers why they must stand.
Verses 14-20 show how they stand.
Stand Therefore
The armor passage begins with the same command: stand.
The armor is not a separate topic; it serves the call to stand.
The Belt of Truth
Truth holds the believer together.
The battle includes lies, half-truths, confusion, and distortion.
Truth is both God’s revealed truth and truthfulness in the inner life.
Word Study: Truth
aletheia refers to truth, reality, and reliability.
The believer does not stand by imagination, but by what God has made known.
The Breastplate of Righteousness
Righteousness guards the heart and life.
The believer’s standing rests on righteousness received in Christ and righteousness practiced in obedience.
Word Study: Righteousness
dikaiosyne includes right standing before God and right conduct before Him.
Both dimensions matter in spiritual battle.
Feet Prepared by the Gospel of Peace
The gospel gives stability and readiness.
Peace with God makes the believer steady when conflict comes.
Word Study: Gospel and Peace
euangelion means good news.
eirene means peace, wholeness, and restored relationship.
The gospel of peace steadies the feet of the believer.
The Shield of Faith
Faith receives and rests upon God.
The fiery darts are met not by self-confidence but by trust in the Lord.
Word Study: Shield
thyreos refers to a large shield.
The image suggests protection sufficient for real attack, not decorative religion.
The Helmet of Salvation
Salvation guards the mind with gospel hope.
The believer remembers what God has done and what God has promised to complete.
The Sword of the Spirit
The sword is identified as the word of God.
This is not permission for harshness; it is dependence on God’s own speech.
Word Study: Word
rhema can refer to a spoken or specific word.
The believer learns to meet deception with God’s revealed truth applied faithfully.
Praying Always
Prayer is not an add-on after the armor.
Prayer is the atmosphere in which the armor is used.
Prayer and Perseverance
Paul joins prayer with watchfulness and perseverance.
Standing requires continuing dependence, not one dramatic moment.
Prayer for All the Saints
Spiritual battle is not merely individual.
The church stands together as believers pray for one another.
Paul’s Request
Paul asks for boldness to speak the mystery of the gospel.
Even an apostle knew his need for God’s help.
The Gospel at the Center
The passage ends not with fascination about darkness, but with gospel proclamation.
The church stands by remaining gospel-centered.

Closing Thought
God does not call believers to stand without supply.
The armor is God’s provision for the battle God has named.
