Welcome to the class page for Solitude, Community, and Service.

This adult class is designed to help us think more deeply about the Christian life as a journey with God, with one another, and with the world around us. Using the writings of Henri Nouwen as a guide, we will explore three important movements in the spiritual life: the movement from loneliness to solitude, from hostility to community, and from self-centered activity to loving service.

The purpose of this class is not simply to study ideas, but to consider how these truths shape our daily walk with Christ. We will reflect on what it means to be still before God, to live honestly and graciously with others, and to serve from a heart rooted in God’s love rather than from anxiety, pressure, or the need to prove ourselves.

What This Class Will Explore

Solitude
We will consider solitude as more than being alone. In the Christian life, solitude is the place where we learn to listen for God’s voice, face ourselves honestly, and remember that our deepest identity is found in being beloved by God.

Community
We will look at community as more than simply being with people. Christian community is formed as we learn to receive one another with grace, practice forgiveness, carry burdens together, and live as members of the body of Christ.

Service
We will reflect on service as more than religious activity or usefulness. True Christian service flows from communion with God and love for others. It is the outward expression of a life being shaped by Christ.

Who This Class Is For

This class is for adults who desire to grow in their understanding of the spiritual life and their walk with Christ. It is for those who want to reflect honestly on loneliness, relationships, ministry, service, and the inner life with God. Whether you are new to Henri Nouwen’s writings or have read him before, you are welcome.

What You Will Find Here

This site will serve as a home for class materials, notes, handouts, Scripture passages, discussion questions, and related reflections. As the class develops, additional resources may be added to help with preparation, review, and continued reflection.

Our Hope

The hope for this class is that we will grow in faithfulness to Christ by learning to live from the center of God’s love. Solitude draws us inward to listen to God. Community draws us outward toward our brothers and sisters. Service sends us into the world as witnesses of Christ’s compassion.

May this class encourage us to walk more humbly, love more deeply, listen more carefully, and serve more faithfully.
